Although he still considers himself an ''A-grade mechanic'', an Alexandra man has called time on five original Land Rovers, which he is auctioning off as a collector's set.

Dave Sinclair said he has had a passion for the classic off-road vehicles ever since he first worked on them as an apprentice mechanic 70 years ago.

After taking advice from a friend, Mr Sinclair is now auctioning five from his beloved collection before they ''rust away in the paddock''.

''They're only going to lie around, if you're not going to do anything else with them. I thought I may as well do something else with the money.''

The models span 1955 Land Rover series 1 LWB 107 and 1971 Land Rover series 2A LWB flat deck.

His online listing has had more than 74,000 views and 31 bids had been made.

Mr Sinclair has fielded several inquirIes on the sale.

He would not disclose how much he wanted for the set but the offers were getting ''bigger and bigger''.

He joked that he might use the money from a potential sale on ''building a shed to put some more Land Rovers in''.

The online auction closed at 9pm yesterday.
