Lake Hawea service

Lake Hawea and Wanaka war veterans will be spoilt for choice this Saturday when deciding where attend Anzac commemorations.

For the first time, the Upper Clutha Returned and Services Association is holding a dawn service at 7am at the Lake Hawea outlet on the dam, specifically so cyclists competing in the 125km Contact Epic Round Lake Hawea ride can attend.

Cyclists doing the shortened 95km version of the race starting from Kids Bush will be able to attend a prerecorded dawn service there at the same time, with both races starting simultaneously at 7.15am.

Those attending the dawn services should be on site by 6.50am to avoid traffic and pedestrian congestion.

Those who intend to spend Anzac Day at more leisurely pursuits can congregate at the Lake Wanaka Centre from 9.30am, where the guest speaker is Snr Sgt Alan Grindell, before marching to the cenotaph for the poppy and wreath-laying ceremony at 10.45am.

RSA personnel and invited guests will then return to the Lake Wanaka Centre for morning tea provided by Wanaka Lions Club and Hammer and Nails.

RSA co-ordinator Bill King said all competitors in the Contact Epic were invited to wear poppies.
