Fuel company Z Energy is set to "trial'' a self-service operation in Alexandra next month which could mean job losses.

The station will operate without staff 24/7 with a "pay at pump'' facility. Z Energy has not ruled out making the change in other locations.

The Otago Daily Times understands the move will spell job losses at the Tarbert St station.

A Z Energy spokeswoman would not confirm how many jobs would be affected by the move at the Alexandra site.

"One staff member will remain during the transition period to help customers adjust,'' she said.

Employees at the station had been offered support by the company, a spokeswoman said.

"The staff at the site have had assistance from their retailer with respect to developing CVs and relocation opportunities (where  they are available and work for people's circumstances) and will continue to receive support in this regard.''

The Alexandra site is one of six Z stations in Central Otago and more than 200 throughout the country.

Z Energy said the company would be monitoring how the self-service trial worked in Alexandra and whether it could be rolled out in other areas.

"While we don't have a transition plan for unmanned sites, we'll be keeping a close eye on how this trial works to consider whether it could work elsewhere.''
