Internet restored after fault found

Ranfurly residents are enjoying the freedom and convenience of the Internet once again, after a Telecom broadband hardware failure left the town in technical isolation over four days last week.

The Internet service to Ranfurly was restored mid-afternoon on Saturday after being disconnected by the fault about noon on Wednesday.

Telecom media relations officer Phil Love said the town's Internet connection should be operating at the same level it was before the technical failure.

He said the fault was difficult to identify at first, and it was discovered and fixed through interchanging equipment.

‘‘Now and then, these things happen. We are dealing with technology and some of those applications are working around the clock . . . we are disappointed that it happened but in this business these things do occur,'' Mr Love said.

Some Ranfurly business owners lost tourism and accommodation bookings, TAB takings, and were forced to use round-about measures to deal with customer transactions.

The financial loss for businesses as a result of the broadband failure was not known.
