Guard of honour

A funeral procession of emergency service vehicles passes through Alexandra yesterday afternoon to honour local man Peter Grayland, who died last week.

Mr Grayland (52), a former police officer and St John paramedic, died during a burn-off on a high country station.

Detective Senior Sergeant Colin Blackie, who led a guard of honour at the Alexandra Police Station, said Mr Grayland's funeral at the Alexandra District Club was packed.

An honour guard was formed during the funeral and another at the cemetery by community groups, emergency services and pupils and teachers from Alexandra schools.

''It was just a magnificent funeral from a wide range of groups of people ... It really did just show the impact that Pete did have. He would have been proud, I'm sure.''
