The work of Central Otago Search and Rescue has just become easier, thanks to a grant enabling it to purchase 10 new radio harnesses required for field work.
Central Otago Search and Rescue co-ordinator Adrian Dance said the harnesses, which fit around the torso, could carry a radio, a GPS and a map within easy reach, rather than in pockets.
The TrustPower Central Otago Lend a Hand Foundation granted the money as part of more than $13,000 worth of community grants. The foundation is a partnership between TrustPower and the Rotary clubs of Cromwell, Alexandra and Roxburgh.
The Salvation Army also received a grant towards a log-splitter to assist its delivery of firewood to the needy. Salvation Army Captain Murray Sanson, of Alexandra, said people in need could apply for 1 cubic metre of firewood.
"It's retired men doing the chopping and it gets a bit hard for them. Chainsaws can cut a lot but the log-splitter will make their job a lot easier," Captain Sanson said.
Other recipients include Alexandra Girl Guides, the Central Otago under 15 boys hockey squad, the Alexandra Aikido Club, the Roxburgh Pioneer Generation Brass Band, the Cromwell Swim Club, the Central Otago Recreational Users Forum Inc, Nicholas Goudie, Callum Geddes, Alex Pascoe and Rachel Hay.
