Further search for missing teen yields nothing

Searchers using a jet ski carried out a sweep of the Clutha River near Roxburgh yesterday afternoon looking for the body of the missing Dunedin teenager presumed drowned after a swimming accident on Tuesday.

Senior Sergeant Mike Cook said the sweep of the river had turned up nothing new and a further sweep would be carried out today.

"To date, the body has not been located, and police are now scaling back the search for the missing youth.

There will be a daily reconnaissance search of the river as we leave the river to cycle through its normal operating levels in the hope that the changing currents, speed and water pressure will allow the river to release the body."

Snr Sgt Cook said subject to weather conditions, police and search teams would return to the river tomorrow with a view to lowering the river again and repeating the search.

The police dive squad spent much of Thursday combing the river after Contact Energy reduced the release rate of water from the Roxburgh Dam, above the site of the accident, for eight hours.

The family have asked police not to release the name of the teenager.
