A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokeswoman said a report was received of a single-vehicle crash blocking Kane Rd, Hawea Flat, just north of The Red Bridge, about 3.45pm.

Two crews and a water tanker were dispatched from Wanaka and Luggate stations.

They assisted police and St John to extract one injured person who was trapped, the spokeswoman said.

A St John spokeswoman said three helicopters, two ambulances, an area support manager, one rapid response vehicle and a prime doctor attended the scene.

One person had critical injuries and was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital.

A person in a serious condition and two people in a moderate condition were airlifted to Dunedin Hospital, the spokeswoman said.

One person had been ejected from the car.
