Police are disappointed with the number of people caught drink-driving in Alexandra and Clyde during the weekend, particularly with the breath-alcohol level of drivers.

"Those who have been caught have blown high," Sergeant Ian Kerrisk, of Alexandra, said.

Police were called to an Alexandra takeaway shop at 5.20pm on Saturday after a report of a car travelling at high speed down Centennial Ave with bottles being thrown from it, Sgt Kerrisk said.

Police found the car and a 24-year-old Cromwell man was charged with obstruction, resisting arrest and disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence.

He was kept in custody and will appear in the Dunedin District Court today.

The 27-year-old driver of the car, also from Cromwell, was processed for drink-driving and recorded a breath-alcohol level of 1010mcg.

"It's staggering that he admits to have driven the 30km from Cromwell to Alexandra at high speed and has then driven down the main street, when there have been a large number of families out and about," Sgt Kerrisk said.

At 7.25pm the same day, a 20-year-old Clyde man was stopped in Sunderland St, Clyde, where he recorded a breath-alcohol level of 987mcg.

On Sunday, at 3.25am a 19-year-old Alexandra man, who was stopped in Chicago St, Alexandra, recorded a breath-alcohol level of 555mcg.

At 3.40am the same day, a 37-year-old Invercargill woman, who was stopped in Centennial Ave, recorded a breath-alcohol level of 567mcg.

"It's extremely disappointing that these people have been caught drink-driving, especially given most of them are local and a great amount of effort has been put into getting the message through that it is not acceptable."

Those arrested for drink-driving will appear in the Alexandra District Court on February 10.

Five drivers were arrested for drink-driving following an operation by an Invercargill-based police unit on Saturday.

Sergeant Steve Watt, of Queenstown, said he did not yet know what the alcohol levels of those apprehended were.

The policing operation had been carried out at Arthurs Point, coinciding with the inaugural Shotover Sunshine Festival.
