Dick Smith store not closing down

Despite rumours circulating in the town, the Dick Smith store in Alexandra is not closing down, a spokeswoman has said.

Those rumours implied the store was to close in order for the parent company, Woolworths Ltd, to extend the Queenstown Dick Smith store at Frankton.

The Woolworths spokeswoman, who was based in Australia, said the Alexandra store definitely would not be closing and that no staff were about to lose their jobs.

However, when asked if closure of the store had been considered, she would only repeat that it would not be closing.

She did say that in January, following a strategic review, the company had announced the Dick Smith business would be sold, but that it would continue to operate as usual.

In a statement released in January, the Woolworths Ltd chief executive, Grant O'Brien, said "we believe that separating this specialty model from Woolworths is now the best option for the future of both businesses".

That same statement said 100 "underperforming" Dick Smith stores would be closed over the next two years.

The spokeswoman said "less than five" of the New Zealand stores would be closing, but which ones was yet to be announced.
