The cost of repairs to a road near Clyde which was damaged by a slip four months ago has to be sorted before any remedial work begins.

Fruitgrowers Rd was closed for two months after the October slip and one lane has been reopened since mid-December. This week, Central Otago District Council roading manager Julie Muir said a survey was being done on the road to assess how much material had been shifted and to estimate the cost of repairs.

A traffic counter over the Christmas holiday period revealed 130 vehicles a day used the road but that was unlikely to be ''representative'' because of the time of year, she said. That exercise would be repeated soon to get a more representative result. The road provides access to the Dunstan Arm Rowing Club base and popular recreation and freedom camping areas.

''It's an important route but not really a high use one,'' Ms Muir said. Contact Energy was continuing to monitor the landslip site and there had been no further movement.
