Cycle trail to be diverted while trees are removed

Cyclists on the Lake Dunstan cycle trail near Bannockburn will travel a slightly different route for a week while tree removal is carried out in the area.

Central Otago Wilding Conifer Control Group project manager Pete Oswald said after interviewing track users and residents, the group had decided to remove wilding and seed source pines at the north side of the Stuart Ferry restoration site, and at the corner of Pearson and Bannockburn Rds.

It would continue the restoration work on the south side of the carpark.

Once the trees were felled, the area north of the carpark would be added to the area being restored to native vegetation by Mōkihi Trust.

Between August 19 and 23 the trail would be diverted for about 320m through a resident’s property.

There might be short delays on other parts of the track as felling occurred, Mr Oswald said.

Traffic management would be in place in Bannockburn Rd.

The land is administered by Land Information New Zealand, which was funding the work.

If funds allowed, the control group would remove unsafe trees and create a safe, manageable perimeter of wilding pines towards Panners Cover Lane.

Felled trees and branches would be removed from the site and chip left piled to help with the restoration planting.
