Police are praising an Alexandra contractor who they say helped solve a crime which allegedly involved one of his staff and also made sure the property owners concerned were not left out of pocket.
Two large plate-glass shop windows in Tarbert St, Alexandra, were broken on Friday last week, Sergeant Derek Ealson said. A local contractor, whom police declined to name, thought some of his employees might have been in the area at the time of the damage, Sgt Ealson said.
''He made his own inquiries and identified a person believed to be responsible. This is a wonderful example of the community working together.''
The contractor had also offered to pay for the cost of repairing the damage, estimated to be about $1000, so the property owners were not left out of pocket.
''I cannot praise the contractor highly enough. It's wonderful to live and police in an area where locals look after each other this way,'' Sgt Ealson said.
A 25-year-old seasonal worker had presented himself at the Alexandra Police Station yesterday, he said. The man would appear in the Alexandra District Court next Wednesday to face two charges of intentional damage.
