Community detention for underwear thief

A man who entered 16 Cromwell properties to steal underwear from clotheslines has been sentenced to community detention for six months, with a curfew preventing him from going out at night.

"My primary concern in sentencing today is to protect the community," Judge Stephen O'Driscoll told Joseph George Bungard (28), unemployed, who appeared in the Alexandra District Court yesterday for sentencing on one representative charge of burglary.

The single burglary charge covered 16 instances between June 29 and October 26 last year in which Bungard had entered properties, Judge O'Driscoll said.

He warned Bungard if he reoffended, he would face imprisonment.

The curfew is from 8pm to 7am daily.

Bungard was also sentenced to intensive supervision for 18 months (special conditions) and ordered to pay reparation of $420 for the stolen underwear.

Judge O'Driscoll said the facts summary said the defendant had stolen underwear from clotheslines and entered other properties with the intention of stealing underwear.

A psychological report prepared in 2004 when Bungard was convicted on a charge of doing an indecent act set out matters about the defendant's background, he said. Some of the contents of that report were still relevant.

Counsel Russell Checketts said reports before the court showed there were "obviously some psychological issues there".
