The Central Otago District Council is following in the footsteps of the local community by establishing a lighting policy for council-owned assets.
Council water services officer Janis Quiding presented a report at Wednesday's council meeting outlining the policy.
The efforts of the Naseby community have been presented as a key point in the report following Naseby Vision's consultation with the International Dark-Sky Association.
Naseby Vision resubmitted its application for Dark Sky Community accreditation in January 2019, the report states.
The policy is based on lighting practices which "adhere to International Dark-Sky Association's lighting standards where feasible" having regulations on light shielding and tilting, intensity and colour, and light timers and their use.
At the council meeting, deputy mayor Neil Gillespie said the proposed policy needed to be "beefed up" having a focus on "educating residents".
Speaking to the Otago Daily Times, Mr Gillespie said although this policy was limited to council-owned buildings and infrastructure at present, it could be a matter for Central Otago residents in the future.
