It is understood talks are taking place with a potential buyer to reopen the Mitchell St building as a garage.
McLaren Machinery Ltd closed on July 12 after more than 50 years.
McLaren's sister company, McLaren Transport Ltd, was sold to Ranfurly Transport Ltd earlier this year.
Maniototo Community Board chairman Robert Hazlett said it was sad to see the company close.
"Fifty years is a long time in business."
Despite the closure, Mr Hazlett did not believe it was getting tougher for local businesses in the area.
"Maybe it is the life cycle.
"All the contractors are busy in the Maniototo."
