Cemetery encroachment issue not yet resolved

Uncertainty surrounds the resolution of a long-running land encroachment matter at Roxburgh Cemetery.

A "significant encroachment of new graves'' on privately-owned land adjoining the cemetery was raised at last month's Teviot Community Board meeting by board member John Pritchard.

It was also a talking point at the meeting of the Roxburgh Cemetery trustees on March 7, Mr Pritchard said.

"It has been raised for quite a number of years, I understand,'' Mr Pritchard said.

"It's quite a significant encroachment.''

The cemetery is in Ladysmith Rd, Roxburgh East.

Mr Pritchard confirmed the neighbouring landowner was in the process of selling a portion of land.

As the block would be "landlocked'' in the event of a sale, the construction of an accessway in the area had been mooted during discussions with the trustees.

At the meeting, council planning and environment executive manager Louise van der Voort said the area was not council-owned land but there was "a boundary issue'' with which the council was helping the neighbouring landowners.

Council statutory property officer Linda Stronach confirmed the cemetery was a Doc reserve managed by the Roxburgh Cemetery trustees.

Doc acting operations manager Annette Grieve said the department was continuing to assist the council on the matter.

"Management of the Roxburgh Cemetery situation is yet to be considered.''

Roxburgh Cemetery Trust president Brian McLean could not be reached for comment.
