In a letter to clients, BNZ Otago-Southland head of region Jason Forbes announced the branch would close permanently on June 25.
In November, BNZ announced it would close some branches, because the way people chose to do their banking had changed rapidly, Mr Forbes said.
‘‘With more New Zealanders banking online and over the phone, we’ve seen fewer people visiting our branches and making transactions in person.
‘‘While these trends have been consistent over the past few years, Covid-19 has fast-tracked them at a pace nobody was predicting.’’
The Cromwell closure is among 38 branches, including four in Otago and Southland, that were earmarked for closure in November.
The closures of the branches were staged and began on Christmas Eve and are scheduled to end next month.
In the South, Cromwell joins branches in Mosgiel, Balclutha and Winton to close.
The BNZ’s Cromwell closure follows that of Kiwibank.
After more than 15 years’ providing banking services, Paper Plus Cromwell and Alexandra will close their respective Kiwibank agencies on May 31.
The Cromwell agency was among the first Kiwibank agencies to be established in New Zealand.
