The four teenagers and four parents competed as teams in their respective categories and turned the competition into a personal challenge as well, to see who would score the most laps in the event, parents or teenagers.
Thomas Begg, Sam Kelly, Will Hinton and Ben Wearing competed as the ''Crash Test Dummies'', and their parents Mat Begg, Glenn Kelly, Sarah Hinton and Simon Wearing competed as ''The Geariatrics''.
Mrs Hinton said the rivalry had been apparent early on, although the teenagers said they were more relaxed.
''We're pretty chilled out,'' Sam said.
''But we'd like to beat them.''
In the end, mechanical issues foiled the teenagers' bid for supremacy and the parents completed 18 laps to 17, also coming third in the veterans' mixed category.
More than 700 people took part in the event, which involved 11.5km laps around a Naseby circuit, one of the organisers, Craig Bates, of Mountainbiking Otago, said.
Mike Sangster, of Alexandra, won the solo men's title with 20 laps, and Imogen Blance (16), won the solo women's title with 16 laps.
The fastest lap time of the day was Ethan Glover, in 27min 31sec.
