Letter of the week: April 21

In recognition of the importance of readers' contributions to the letters page, the newspaper each week selects a Letter of the Week, with a book prize courtesy of Longacre Press.

This week's winner is Nikki Hall, of Mornington, who says extending parental leave provisions is not affordable. She receives a copy of The Trouble With Fire (Random House), by Fiona Kidman. Nikki's letter, was published on Wesdnesday.

Parental leave
Reading the letter from Adrienne Buckingham Tagg today (ODT, 12.4.12), I would think that most people would know the basics of how a taxation system works. You get a pool of money coming in from the taxpayer and it gets divided up into groups for essential spending.

The UK has a much larger population base to get money from, as does our neighbour Australia. When you take that into account and add the amount of people that we already have on benefits then surely people can see that we can't afford it.

It's like the men that say our rugby players don't get paid as much as those in other countries, but that, once again, is due to our population base and how many people pay to go to the rugby. I think it's time we used a bit of common sense, stopped being greedy and stopped expecting the State to provide us with our lifestyles.

This is not a womb to the tomb society that we live in. Someone has to pay for this and believe me, I can't afford it. I am not a National voter but I am truly disapointed in those that think this is do-able.
