Widespread interest has been aroused in the Highway-Lake Logan Loan poll today, and there is reason to believe that the vote cast will be considerably larger than that usually recorded on such occasions. Polling will take place between the hours of 9am and 7pm, at 21 booths that have been appointed. It should be clearly understood that all who are on the roll as ratepayers or as freeholders, both men and women, have the right to vote, but those who are enrolled simply under the "residential" qualification are not entitled to vote on a loan proposal. The committees set up to advocate the proposal held a final meeting under the chairmanship of the Mayor (Mr H.L. Tapley) yesterday afternoon. Those who find difficulty in getting to a booth should get in touch with the office of the Expansion League with a view to having a car sent for them. The following are the polling places: Burns Hall, Knox Church Sunday School, Stuart St Oddfellows’ Hall, Albany Street School, George Street School, Dormer’s Dining Rooms, North-East Valley Town Hall, Opoho Presbyterian Church, St Andrew’s Church Hall, Caversham Oddfellows’ Hall, Caversham Methodist Sunday School, Kensington Oddfellows’ Hall, South Dunedin Town Hall, Reid Hall, St Clair Pavilion, Anderson’s Bay Presbyterian Church, Arthur Street School, Roslyn Salvation Army Hall, Waikari Hall, Coronation Hall and Mornington Tramway Buildings.

Dam construction site busy
A visit to Kawarau Falls, Lake Wakatipu, has always been regarded by tourists as a very pleasant half-day’s outing. For many months hence additional interest will attach to this trip in view of the construction of the Kawarau Gold Mining Company’s dam across the outlet of Lake Wakatipu. It is some weeks now since operations commenced at the site, and consistent progress has been made with the excavation that has had to be undertaken as a preliminary to the building of the first piers and intervening sill. At present some of the drilling equipment is being awaited, and when this comes to hand the heavy strata of stone that has been met with will soon be disposed of. Meantime it is being worked by other methods, mostly by hand drills. The metal is of a flinty quality, and it will be saved for building into the dam later on when the cement mixer gets to work. The number of men employed at present is about 25, and the scene all round is a busy one. During the week the company landed a motor truck out there for the more expeditious transport of materials.

Swimming lessons build skills
Yesterday morning, at Mr Olds’s invitation, I watched a number of primary school children going through their swimming exercises at the Municipal Baths. Mr Olds's method is to teach them the overarm stroke first, so as to pick out the promising swimmers, and then the children will have an opportunity of developing the stroke to which they are most suited. They seem perfectly at home in the water, and have acquired a confidence which they did not possess at the beginning of the season. — by ‘Neptune’ — ODT, 20.11.1924
