Family of injured man receive support

Family members of a man badly injured in a car crash near Clyde on Wednesday say they are receiving messages of support from people in the community.

Peter Douglas Wilson (52), of Clyde, remains in a stable condition in intensive care at Dunedin Hospital.

He has not regained consciousness since the incident, in which the Ford Laser he was driving collided with a small security van occupied by two people.

Mr Wilson was the sole occupant of the Laser and the only person seriously injured in the accident.

Mr Wilson's sister Liz Ngatai spoke to the Otago Daily Times yesterday about her brother's condition and the strong support she and her other brother, Chris, had received from concerned Clyde and Alexandra residents.

"In the last couple of days, I have felt like a broken record telling everyone how Peter is, because so many people are asking after him.

"Chris has also had lots of phone calls," she said.

Mrs Ngatai (49) said Peter was a well-known member of the community.

"Everyone knows him, but a lot of people didn't know he was in the accident. He had been visiting a friend in Alexandra and was heading home when it happened," she said.

"He [Peter] is very tough and we just hope that he'll be back with us soon," Mrs Ngatai said.

Police think sun-strike may have been a contributing factor in the accident, which happened about 4.45pm.
