The Lake County A and P Show held on Saturday at the Lake Hayes Showground, near Queenstown, attracted one of its biggest crowds.

It was a gloomy and overcast day but the rain held off until the evening, and hundreds of spectators made their way to the showground for a family-oriented day of competitions and entertainment.

The theme for the 95th Lake County A and P Show was "Town Meets Country" and the show's special guest, TV show host Te Radar, said it had been a success to focus on the lifestyle section of the rural market.

"I love going to these A and P shows and this has been a wonderful day with a great crowd. It is especially amazing to see how much effort the kids put into their entries."

Te Radar had fun judging some of the more curious competitions, like "best scarecrow" and "best thistle".

"The most fun I had all day was taking part in the 'ride-on lawn mower race'. I came in as No 5," he said.

The pavilion section, where produce, cooking and arts and crafts were judged, had its highest number of entries and organiser Sue Buckenham said she was impressed with the children's creations.

A new category was the "recession baskets", where competitors displayed a selection of home-grown products.

"The show has some very loyal supporters and it just keeps getting better."
