Fraud charges have been laid by police against a Milton woman over allegations of the theft of $43,000 from the Westpac bank in Milton where she worked.
It is the second confirmed bank fraud allegation made in Otago during the past six days and the fourth incident to occur at a Westpac branch during the past three months.
Constable Mark Gill, of Balclutha, yesterday said a 45-year-old woman, now an ex-employee of Westpac, had been summonsed to appear in the Dunedin District Court on August 27 "in relation to allegations of theft over a period of time of $43,000 from the Westpac bank".
Grant Henderson, of Westpac's fraud and security services, was contacted but would only confirm "a matter" at Milton had been under investigation by the bank, but had since been passed on to police.
He declined to give details of how the alleged fraud came to light, saying he did not want to prejudice any pending court proceedings.
Const Gill was aware the Milton community had been speculating on other allegations of fraud.
However, no complaint had been made to police by the organisation concerned, and no charges had been laid.
