Auction to raise funds for SPCA

An art and craft auction in Oamaru on Friday will raise much-needed funds for the North Otago SPCA.

In April, the branch said it was facing a crisis situation as it was having to use capital to cover day-to-day operational costs.

The auction will be held at the Whisky Bar, with viewing of the items today and tomorrow from 10am until 4pm and Friday from 10am until the start of the auction at 7pm.

It includes works from artists and artisans including Colin Wheeler, Burns Pollock, Peter Cleverley, Kit McGregor, Trish Shirley, Michael O'Brien and Donna Demente and Jeff Mitchell.

Vetlife Oamaru offered the SPCA a building, next to its premises on the corner of Thames and Torridge Sts, to house a shelter after the Stuart St premises failed a RNZSPCA inspection.

Committee member Kay King said the shelter had to move - "we can't stay where we are" - and the project could cost about $200,000.

The exact cost was not known at this stage as the project had not yet gone out to tender. The branch would be applying for grants while other fundraising initiatives, including a variety concert at the Penguin Club in September, were planned.
