The restoration of St Luke's Church - one of Oamaru's most prominent buildings - is nearing completion.

The $286,000 project included stonework restoration, repair and protection of stained glass windows and new carpet and lighting in the interior.

The prominent site, on the corner of Itchen and Tees Sts, was purchased for 50 in 1864.

The church was built in three stages, the first completed for services in late 1865, and consecrated the foll-owing year.

St Luke's is the oldest church building in Oamaru still used for its original purpose as a place of worship.
