Otago Polytechnic students have lost one of their leaders.

Ryan Ward, who, with Meegan Cloughley, was 2009 co-president, has resigned from today.

Mr Ward (21) said financial constraints had led to his decision.

"I would have been in a bad position financially if I had continued in the role."

He has found work as a builder.

Mr Ward has been involved with student politics since 2006, when he was elected to the Otago Polytechnic Students Association executive.

He was vice-president in 2007 and since last year has been co-president with Ms Cloughley.

Because the pair shared the position, Ms Cloughley had to resign as well, but the executive has elected her acting president for the remainder of the year.
