Tennis: Scott through to semifinals

Otago's Libby Scott is turning heads at the national 16-and-under championships in Hamilton this week.

Seeded ninth, she won her second-round match against Mika Deane (North Harbour) 6-1, 6-1 then went on to upset eighth seed Mikaela Davies (North Harbour) 6-2, 6-2 on Wednesday.

Scott logged another impressive win, 6-2, 6-3, in her quarterfinal against third seed Tuscany Hamel (Canterbury) yesterday.

She has set up a meeting with fifth seed Heidi Stewart (Bay of Plenty) in the semifinal today.

After losing her second-round match, Louise Oxnevad (Queenstown) has won three matches to reach the semifinal of the consolation event, putting out two seeds in her progress.

Fourteen-year-old Harry James (Arrowtown) put out sixth seed Andrew van der Vyver (Waikato) before falling to top seed Adam Lee (Auckland) in a quarterfinal yesterday.

Van der Vyver has raced through the consolation draw with easy wins, his progress there giving greater significance to James' earlier result.
