Alexandra mountain bikers shone during the inaugural Skins Alpine Epic stage race, which finished at Tekapo last weekend.

Three teams comprising six Alexandra residents won top three placings in their sections of the four-day race, which comprised five stages.

Malcolm McLeod and Geof Blance won the veteran men's section and came fourth overall, in a time of 13hr 58min 53sec.

Georgie McLean and Denise Thorne came second in the open and veteran women's section, and 32nd overall in 19hr 11min 49sec.

Team Only Live Once, made up of Don Black and Richard Spence, took third place in the veteran men's section.

They arrived home 18th overall, in 17hr 44min 15sec.

McLeod said conditions during the race were near perfect, with cooler temperatures than expected.

Fourth place overall was a coup for the team, as he and Blance had been excited to keep up with top riders such as Kashi Leuchs and Marcus Roy, who won the event, McLeod said.

"We were really happy with our result, it definitely boosts your confidence to keep up with and ride alongside people at that level."

"We are keen to do it next year," McLeod said.

The race, which was New Zealand's first stage mountain bike race, started at Mt Somers on February 25 and finished at Tekapo on Saturday.

Overall, 60 teams of two people took part, with each participant completing the full course.
