The former Oamaru Columba Presbyterian Church community is still dealing with issues around the demise of their congregation in April, the Southern Presbytery says.

Executive officer Alan Judge said it was too soon for a decision to be made on the future of the Wansbeck St church building vacated by the group.

Last September, the congregation voted unanimously to dissolve as a group due to dwindling numbers and corresponding cost increases.

Ownership and responsibility for the church that served as its base for 135 years was transferred to the Southern Presbytery and Synod of Otago and Southland.

Mr Judge said two committees were set up in the wake of the closure, one to look after the building, "to make sure that if anything goes wrong it gets fixed''.

The second working group focused on the long-term plan for the building.

"Presbyterians are good at taking their time over things and people have been part of that congregation all their lives so it's best to not move too quickly over it.

"They've got a bit of grief to go through.

"Eventually they will have to make some decisions because there's no point in having a building sitting there empty.''

Mr Judge said the pattern of congregations dissolving themselves was ongoing.

A congregation in Otautau recently voted to dissolve.

Last year, the church's community on Otago Peninsula was dissolved.

Mr Judge said the church did not view a congregation dissolving as a failure.

"There's acknowledgement that sometimes congregations have completed the job they've been called to do. Dissolving a parish isn't seen as a disaster, but more the time for that congregation has come to an end.''
