A $1.14-million roading project on State Highway 1 between Waikouaiti and Palmerston should be finished on schedule.

New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) safety engineer Roy Johnston, of Dunedin, said work started on the Jefferis Rd realignment near Flag Swamp and Tumai Rd in December, and should be completed by May.

Timaru-based contractors Rooney Earthmoving were taking out two tight S-bend "reverse curves" on a section of road with an established crash history, identified as a "problem spot" by roading engineers.

The realignment work was 1.5km from the $7-million Tumai-Waikouaiti upgrade completed in late 2007 which eliminated the Tumai overbridge accident black spot.

Mr Johnston said northbound traffic travelling from Queens Gardens on to Crawford St, in Dunedin, on SH 1 could be reduced to one lane at times, and delays were possible next week as NZTA contractors carried out seal upgrades.
