Rugby: Things are looking up for Taieri College

Taieri College is on the board.

The school has struggled in the Otago premier school rugby tournament but it now has one more win this season than it managed during the first round last year.

On Saturday, the team travelled to Wanaka and beat Mt Aspiring College, 38-22.

The victory is perhaps further confirmation the team will not be so easily rolled this season.

It was pipped 15-14 by Kavanagh College in the opening round and last week lost to St Kevin's College 22-12.

On Saturday, it was not to be denied for a third consecutive week.

Taieri battled into a decent breeze and led 17-15 at halftime thanks to tries from lock Jordan Bell and No 8 Hunter Dale.

"There was a bit of a wind blowing so we were pretty happy to be up by two at the break,'' coach Dave Hunter said.

"We kept it pretty close. It was about holding on to possession really and we did that well during the first half.''

Taieri added three second-half tries to secure a four-try bonus point.

The turning point game when loose forward Sam Dyer charged down the ball.

He got a kind bounce, regathered and ran 10m to dot down under the posts.

Dyer had a strong game in the pack and also kicked well, converting all five tries and adding a penalty.

To nail six from six in the windy conditions was a sterling effort, Hunter said.

Hooker Brad Hannah and halfback Tane Marshall scored the other tries for Taieri.

"We're a pretty young team and this will be good for our confidence to realise we are in the mix.''

In the other games, Otago Boys' High School 2nd XV smashed Kavanagh College 69-0.

John McGlashan retained its place at the top of the standings with a 22-12 win against South Otago High School.

The game was a repeat of last year's final.

Dunstan High School also made it three from three with a comfortable 48-32 win against St Kevin's College.

Waitaki Boys' High School beat King's High School earlier in the week.
