Journey of the Otagos, a film documentary linked to the WW1 display, ''Dunedin's Great War'', was joint winner with Southland's Mataura Museum - the latter for its project involving ''reinventing the Mataura Museum'' - for ''best project''.
The 11-part documentary was made by settlers museum curator and historian Sean Brosnahan and his cameraman son, Joseph, and had previously been shortlisted in the national ServiceIQ New Zealand Museum Awards.
And the settlers museum exhibition, Dunedin's Great War, was also ''highly commended'' in another award section, ''best exhibition over $20,000''.
The overall awards, linked to Museums Aotearoa, the national museums professional body, were announced last night at a dinner at the museum, on the first day of the latest Museums Aotearoa national conference.
This gathering is being hosted mainly by the Otago Museum but also supported by several other cultural institutions, including the settlers museum and the Dunedin Public Art Gallery.
Other awards. - Best exhibition over $20,000: Air New Zealand, Workshop e, and Te Papa; best exhibition under $20,000: MTG Hawkes Bay; best museum visitor experience: Waihi Gold Discovery Centre; most innovative public programme: Expressions Art and Entertainment Centre; most innovative use of te reo Maori: Museum of Transport and Technology.
