Cricket: Bates has her eye on prizes

Otago Sparks captain Suzie Bates is targeting a final in 2015 - and any final will do.

The defending one-day champions have fallen behind in the competition following a brace of losses to both Auckland and Canterbury.

The Sparks breathed some life back into their campaign with back-to-back wins over Central Districts during the Christmas break, and with a maximum of 20 points up for grabs from the last four games, the Sparks could still slip into the final.

However, Bates said the twenty20 final shaped as a more realistic goal.

''We haven't crunched the numbers, but we sort of figure that we have to win the next four one-dayers,'' she said.

''We've probably got a better chance of making the twenty20 final, but if we keep winning, we might give ourselves a chance.''

Otago will play Northern Districts in a twenty20 match in Alexandra today, followed by one-day games tomorrow and on Sunday.

Bates believes her side should be able to win those games, setting up an exciting last-round clash with Wellington in Dunedin in mid-January.

Otago is in third place in the twenty20 competition with two wins from three games, but fifth in the one-day standings with two wins from six games.

If the Sparks win their remaining two twenty20 games, a final beckons, whereas they could win their last four one-day games and still miss out.

''When we started the season, we wanted to defend the one-day title but knew it was going to be tough,'' Bates said.

''But I guess with where we are at on the points table the twenty20 is probably a bit more realistic. To make two finals in two seasons regardless of what format would be a pretty good achievement.''

Bates whacked a 149-ball undefeated 150 in the 15-run win over Central Districts on Monday, so is in great nick.

''It was different from my other hundreds. It was a bit of a struggle. It was quite slow and we kept losing wickets at the other end.

''I had it in my mind that 250 was only going to be par on that wicket. I actually didn't think we were going to get there, but I managed to stay in until the end and whack a few and take a few more risks.

''It was probably one of my better innings in terms of pacing the innings and I didn't give too many chances. I hadn't spent that much time in the middle this season, so that was good, and it was nice to get some wins as well, because we've been struggling a little bit early on.''
