A cake in the form of a giant spider made by a Dunedin cake maker as a tribute to Sir Peter Jackson looks like it might bite back.

Arbitrary Cakes owner Zarlene Kane teamed up with 31 other cake-makers from around the country to celebrate Sir Peter and the last movie in the Hobbit trilogy.

Dubbed Cakes from Middle Earth, the project saw the cake-makers coming up with cakes designed to look like things from Peter Jackson's films.

Ms Kane decided to model her cake on Shelob, the giant spider from The Lord of the Rings.

The gravity-defying cake is rice bubble flavour. Its bloated rice bubble body is supported by legs made from modelling chocolate, only three of which touch the ground.

It took Ms Kane between 20 and 30 hours to make, not including planning and watching films for inspiration.

The Shelob cake was the most frightening gateau she had ever made.

''I hate spiders - normally I can't even pick up a tiny one,'' she said.

Other cakes made around New Zealand included one of Gollum from The Lord of the Rings, a ''prawn'' alien from District 9, the Goblin King from The Hobbit, King Kong and even a bust of Sir Peter.

Ms Kane got into cake-making three and a-half years ago, after her son was born.

Her first project was making cakes for nurses at the hospital.

Later she began Arbitrary Cakes, a company specialising in custom-made cakes. She works from the registered kitchen at the St Kilda Tavern.

Every order is different and she has made cakes in the form of dinosaurs, cartoon characters, cars, a beer being poured and even dirty gumboots.
