Car fire possibly caused by battery charging

A car fire in Invercargill which threatened a building this afternoon may have been caused by a "battery on charge", fire officials say.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) spokesman said they received reports of a car fire in the suburb of Rockdale, about 12.50pm.

Crews from Kingswell and Invercargill responded and upon arrival said the fire was well-involved.

The blaze had initially threatened a nearby building, the spokesman said.

The fire was extinguished about 1.40pm and was possibly started by "a battery on charge", he said.

It is the second similar blaze in as many days in the Invercargill area after a "suspicious" car fire spread to vegetation at Tiwai yesterday.

The cause of today's fire remains unknown.
