Environment Southland in a statement yesterday said it was investigating reports of an algal bloom in Crooked Arm, Doubtful Sound, and whether it was connected to reports of jack mackerel fish in the area.
Environment Southland team leader aquatic ecosystems Ash Rabel said while an algal bloom in this area was not uncommon, it was concerning as the bloom could damage important ecosystems and be harmful to humans if touched or consumed.
"We’re urging water enthusiasts visiting Doubtful Sound to be vigilant about contact with the algal bloom, and to keep their equipment clean to avoid any spread of harmful species," he said.
Samples were being analysed to understand if there was any relationship between the algal bloom and the fish deaths.
Fish collected from the area should be thoroughly cleaned and cooked before eating and shellfish should be avoided until there was clarity on the species causing the bloom.
