A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said they responded to reports of a car fire in Clyde Hill about 6am.

Crews extinguished the blaze, which is being treated as suspicious.

They left the scene in the care of police, but were called back a short time later after smoke was seen coming from a nearby house.

Crews from Lookout Point and Dunedin found the fire in an exterior barge board and extinguished it.

A fire investigator had been called to the scene, the spokesman said.
