Vehicle crashes and a grenade disposal helped keep Wānaka police busy this week, Senior Sergeant Fiona Roberts says.

On Wānaka’s roads, the police’s Impairment Prevention Team (IPT) stopped 501 vehicles at checkpoints, resulting in one driver being discovered over the limit.

Snr Sgt Roberts said police were still waiting on the blood results of the one driver caught out, but said the outcome was overall "pleasing".

On Thursday, September 26 at around 5am, police were called to an incident involving a vehicle colliding with a power pole on Aubrey Rd.

The driver was assessed by ambulance staff at scene with no injuries, and has been charged with excess breath alcohol (903mcg), dangerous driving, driving contrary to terms of zero alcohol and breach of bail.

Police opposed bail and the driver has been remanded in custody.

"This is a disappointing incident," Snr Sgt Roberts said.

"Police will continue to do everything within our power to remove recidivist drivers off our roads. The consequences are immense, on so many levels."

On Saturday, September 28 a grenade was disposed of at Wastebusters.

Snr Sgt Roberts said she wanted to thank the staff at Wastebusters who managed the situation "extremely well".

"My advice, if you discover an unexploded ordnance, or if you are unsure of its status ... don’t touch it, leave the area and call 111.

"Certainly don’t transport it to another location. Police and NZDF will activate an EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) team to neutralise the ordnance.

"I acknowledge that this was well intended, however I encourage people to please consider what you are disposing of and think through the implications."

She said the the EOD unit would attend any part of New Zealand, 24/7, 365 daysa year to assess, remove, or destroy any potentially hazardous explosive items.

On Saturday, September 28 a man was involved in a fight at Bullock Bar.

When they police arrived, the man was aggressive, swearing and verbally abusive towards them.

Snr Sgt Roberts said the man was initially warned about his disorderly conduct, but they were called back later and he was arrested.

The man is facing charges of disorderly behaviour, possession of cannabis and also escaping custody after he ran off following his initial arrest.

On the evening of Sunday, September 29, a man who was driving west on Meadowstone Dr failed to see a car parked on the side of the road.

His vehicle collided with the parked vehicle, which then went through the fence of a nearby property.

Snr Sgt Roberts said the single occupant left the scene before police arrived and did not leave his details with any of the witnesses.

The driver has since been located and spoken to.

He has been charged with careless driving.
