The weather took a bitter turn yesterday with snow in Central Otago, a day after Dunedin students frolicked in foam.
The students were a mix of beaming grins and bubbles in Leith St at a testing of a foam cannon on Thursday.
Gravity Events owner Dave Isaacs said the new cannon was imported from China and arrived in Dunedin two weeks ago.
The cannon was booked for a Christchurch event this weekend and it needed to be tested before it left Dunedin, Mr Isaacs said.
''We thought we'd go down to studentville and give it a go.''
A different white covering tested farmers in Central Otago yesterday.
Sheep and beef farmer Karl McDiarmid said about 8cm of snow fell on his 1330ha farm in Oturehua, at the head of the Ida Valley, yesterday.
The snow began falling at 4am, stopped falling about 9am and had melted by 2pm, Mr McDiarmid said.
A ''wee few'' lambs died on the farm yesterday, he said.
''When you have livestock, you have dead stock. We can't control the weather and you've got to take it on the chin.''
Sheep and beef farmer Phil Dowling said 8cm of snow fell on his 1000ha farm, near Naseby Forest, yesterday.
The 5500 lambs on the farm survived the cold weather, he said.
''It didn't have the cold winds luckily - it was quite calm with no freezing wind and it melted away.''
Although snow during lambing was annoying, it had provided moisture for grass growth, he said.
