First fee upgrade since 2004

New parking infringement and towage fees, which are set by central government, came into effect on Tuesday.

A Dunedin City Council spokesperson said the Ministry of Transport had confirmed the new fees, which applied nationally and which territorial authorities such as the council were obliged to use.

The amendment to the regulations, by the Land Transport (Offences and Penalties) Amendment Regulations 2024, was the first update to parking infringement fees since 2004.

The government’s changes apply a Consumer Price Index adjustment which increases parking infringement fees by around 70% in most cases.

However, the fee for parking in a mobility park without displaying a valid mobility permit has increased more significantly, from $150 to $750.

The spokesperson said, in a statement, that while the DCC was not responsible for setting the fees, it recognised the impact the increases could have on motorists who might be unaware of the changes.
