Swimming meet makes a splash

Queenstown Swimming Club’s (QSC) attracted what’s believed to be a record field for its two-day early-bird meet this weekend.

Nowadays called the Colin Walker Memorial Meet, in honour of a two-time club president who made a huge contribution to the sport, it features 153 swimmers from clubs around the South Island including 28 QSC swimmers and, for example, about 34 from Winton’s Johnston Waters Swimming Club.

Last year, six national reps from Dunedin’s Neptune Swimming Club even attended, including world-class Olympian Erika Fairweather.

QSC head coach Jedi Morland Janes, who’s experiencing the meet for the first time, says it’s a fantastic turn-out, and a credit to the club committee for pulling it together.

Swimmers view the event as an early chance to get qualifying times ahead of the main season.
