Television and film actor Tim Foley, who now lives in Auckland and recently starred as All Black captain Richie McCaw in the made-for-television movie The Kick, yesterday returned to his old school to share his experiences of being a professional actor.
The key to making a career out of acting in New Zealand was ''working hard''.
However, as in other careers, there would be periods when it was difficult.
''What will carry you through those periods, probably, is if you really want to do it.''
Developments in technology meant those wanting to make it in the industry could much more easily do their own thing.
''Get into the habit of coming up with your own ideas and that can kind of launch you.''
He also said he had fond memories as a pupil at Logan Park, which he left in 1996.
''One of the overwhelming things about being here is that it smells the same. It's an amazingly comforting smell.''
Foley's acting work includes roles on television shows Shortland Street , Nothing Trivial, and the Hollywood film Jack the Giant Slayer.
