Dunedin artist Andy McCready puts the finishing touches on a film noir-themed artwork on a telecommunications cabinet in Forth St, Dunedin.

Ms McCready is one of nine Dunedin artists selected to paint 12 of the Chorus-owned cabinets around the city over the next few months.

Another cabinet, in Kaikorai Valley Rd, painted by Jack Pillans, is already completed.

Chorus pays artists $1000 to paint each cabinet as part of a national project to stop them being targeted with graffiti.

The Dunedin City Council helped collate proposals and organised consent for the works, which was granted last week.

Other artists to paint cabinets are Sam Ovens, Tessa Petley, Jon Chapman, Julia Young, Katie Willis, Aroha Novak and William Luskie.

The cabinets to be painted are in North, South and central Dunedin, Kaikorai and Northeast Valley.
