Strong numbers and a good team culture took Dunstan High School all the way to the finish in the Central Otago Girls Rugby final last Wednesday.

Playing to a big crowd at Molyneux Park in Alexandra, Dunstan beat Cromwell College’s First XV 27-19, winning the competition for the third time in a row.

Cromwell went into halftime leading 12-19, but a reinvigorated Dunstan came back hard, scoring three unanswered tries.

Dunstan co-captain Madie Hill said the team gave their all in an "outstanding" second half.

"[We were] getting it wide and using our speed and our back line ... keeping to our structure and playing our game."

Hill said there was a strong rivalry between the two teams which made for a great contest.

"[There is] big competition ... it’s always a good game with them," she said.

Dunstan co-coach Matt Fowler said the team’s culture made the win possible.

"We’ve really been able to build and keep that momentum going — that’s on the back of a good culture."

"I was proud of them ... they finished strong," Fowler said.

It was believed to be the first time in the competition’s history, which had run since the 1990’s, that a team had won three times in a row, Fowler said.

Cromwell captain Amelia Dickey said the team gave their all and kept their heads high.

"Absolutely outstanding, I’m so unbelievably proud of all our girls.

"[We’ve been] really rarking up support so it was awesome seeing supporters from Cromwell come down."
