Transpower staff work to replace one of the state-owned enterprise’s main transformers at its South Dunedin substation.

A Transpower spokesman said crews were using a spare transformer transported from Christchurch.

Because the spare transformer was large and weighed 105 tonnes, it "provided some logistical challenges" which required service providers to disassemble it for lifting and transporting.

"But nothing we’re not used to," the spokesman said.

The transformer was expected to be commissioned on June 19, he said.
