A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said they responded to reports of a building fire about 12.15pm yesterday.
The fire in the single-storey dwelling in Duke St was out when crews arrived and a fire investigator briefly attended, the spokesman said.
At the scene, Senior Station Officer Aaron Collins said the small fire appeared to be caused by a candle on a windowsill in a bedroom.
A curtain had caught on fire, but it was put out pretty quickly and all the occupants were safe.
SSO Johnston advised that if people wanted to light candles, they should not do so near open windows where a curtain could blow on to them.
