Hockey: Kings too slick for University Black

After suffering a heavy defeat by University Blue last week, Kings United A bounced back to beat University Black 5-0 in the men's premier grade on Saturday.

It was a business-like performance for Kings in attack and defence. The passes were crisp and it played a controlled performance around the field.

University's best chance at goal came in the fifth minute when it earned a penalty corner, but Lachie Davidson's flick was blocked.

Five minutes later, Kings earned its own penalty corner, which Rhuebyn Prattley easily converted.

University played without standout goalkeeper Sam French in the first half, but University Dugongs' Hamish Van Dyk stepped up and made several crucial saves to hold Kings to 1-0 at halftime.

The game was played at pace when the two sides returned to the field for the second half and although both looked fired up, it was Kings that made the most of its opportunities.

An initial attempt from a penalty corner hit the post, but Kings added two quick goals through Aaron Farrell and Prattley to increase its lead to 3-0.

University then earned another penalty corner which was saved and turned into an attacking opportunity for Kings.

When Campbell Paton scored his side's fourth goal, the writing was on the wall for the students, but they made a late charge to salvage some pride.

After another penalty corner came to no avail for the students, Kings capitalised and put the final nail in the coffin when Farrell added his second goal on the stroke of fulltime.

Kings player-coach James Nation said he was pleased with the improvement of his side compared with the performance against University Blue.

''In the past we haven't done that, so it was a nice change to see it today.''

In the other game, Taieri Tuataras beat Taieri B 11-0.

The Albany A-University Blue and KETOB A-University Seals games were deferred, due to representative duties for players at under-18 tournaments.
