An innovative bike track in native bush and a wetland view will attract people to the upgraded Walton Park, Saddle Hill Community Board chairman Scott Weatherall says.
Mr Weatherall said after the upgrade the park at Fairfield would become a ''go-to'' destination for Dunedin residents.
The work should be finished this year and would include a walking track, and a children's bike track among a large area of newly planted native bush, he said.
The track would have an elevated starting platform and with minimal pedalling, a cyclist could ''glide'' around the course by using the initial momentum and leaning.
''For little people, it is really going to advance their capability on a bike.''
A recent community board workshop with Fairfield School pupils revealed the children wanted ''decent toilets, a bike track and a flying fox'' in the upgrade.
''We're pretty hopeful we are going to get all those,'' Mr Weatherall said.
The toilet block renovation would include a mural painting, he said.
A second mountain biking track would be constructed near the sports fields, he said.
The large pine trees removed behind the sports field resulted in new fencing being installed to stop sports balls going down the hill towards the road to the Fairfield landfill.
A new walkway at the back of the sports field would expose views of the wetlands at Kaikorai Estuary, he said.
