Bowls: McIlroy claims second NEV crown

Shannon McIlroy wracked up his second major bowls win of the summer by winning the North East Valley 10,000 invitational singles in Dunedin today.

It was also McIlroy's second taste of success at the same tournament, having won the event as a 19 year-old in 2006.

Only three weeks ago, he showed his class by outbowling the best young players in the country to take the national under-26 title at Elmwood.

McIlroy is determined to play his way back into the New Zealand team after losing his place ahead of the world championships in January.

"Missing out on the world champs has made me so hungry," he said after beating Shaun Scott of North East Valley 25-20 in the final.

"I felt great over the three days -- I had a vibe, a weird feeling that I was going to do well here. I wanted to finish in the top eight but to win it two years out of three, it's awesome." Scott led for much of the match and was still ahead at 17-14 whenMcIlroy dragged the jack to gain four shots and never looked back.

Sydney based Andrew Todd beat Cantabrian Shayne Sincock to win the plate final 21-9.
